Why Our Accreditations Matter: The Standards Behind Lynch Brother Homes
Choosing a builder is one of the biggest decisions a homeowner can make. You’re inviting a team into your home, trusting them with your property, and often committing tens of thousands of pounds to a project that will shape how you live for years to come. With so much at stake, you need more than a good-looking website and a confident quote. You need independently verified proof that the company you’re hiring has earned the right to be trusted.
At Lynch Brother Homes, we hold memberships and accreditations with five of the UK’s most respected industry bodies. Each one required us to pass independent vetting, submit to inspections, and meet standards that go far beyond what’s legally required to operate as a builder. Together, they provide multiple layers of protection and accountability for every client we work with.
Here’s what each accreditation involves, what we had to demonstrate to earn it, and — most importantly — what it means for you and your project.
TrustMark — Government-Endorsed Quality
TrustMark isn’t a trade association or a review platform. It’s the UK’s only government-endorsed quality scheme for work carried out in and around the home. Established in 2005 as a not-for-profit organisation, TrustMark operates under a Master Licence Agreement with the government, which means its standards are set and monitored at a level above typical industry self-regulation.
To become TrustMark registered, Lynch Brother Homes had to pass a series of checks covering three core areas: technical competence, trading practices, and customer service. This included a full Experian credit check on the company’s financial history, verification of public liability insurance (minimum £2 million indemnity), employer’s liability insurance (minimum £10 million), proof of a written complaints procedure, and a health and safety policy reviewed within the last two years. We also had to pass both a desk-based assessment and an on-site assessment, where an independent inspector evaluated the quality of our completed work and our conduct on the job.
Registration isn’t a one-off event, either. TrustMark requires registered businesses to undergo independent inspection at least once every three years, and our Scheme Provider monitors our work, trading practices, and customer satisfaction on an ongoing basis. If a registered business falls below the required standards, TrustMark has the authority to suspend or remove them from the scheme entirely.
For our clients, TrustMark registration delivers some of the most robust consumer protections available in the UK building industry. Every job over £500 (plus VAT) must come with a written guarantee. We are required to provide financial protection policies, including deposit protection and insurance-backed guarantees — meaning that even in the unlikely event a company ceases trading, the homeowner’s investment remains protected. There’s also a formal dispute resolution process, giving clients an independent avenue to resolve any issues.
When you’re committing to a significant project like a home extension or a full property refurbishment, knowing your builder operates under government-endorsed standards — with real financial safeguards behind them — provides a level of reassurance that no amount of marketing can replicate.

Federation of Master Builders (FMB)
The Federation of Master Builders is the UK’s largest trade association in the construction industry, representing over 8,000 small and medium-sized building firms. Founded in 1941 during the London Blitz — when a group of 15 small builders came together with the aim of helping the country rebuild — the FMB has spent more than 80 years establishing itself as the standard-bearer for professional building companies in the UK. It operates as a not-for-profit, with all membership fees reinvested into supporting members and raising industry standards.
Unlike directories where you simply pay to be listed, FMB membership has to be earned. The vetting process is a two-stage procedure. First, the FMB conducts background checks covering trading history, credit history, director checks (for limited companies), and verification of public liability and employer’s liability insurance. Only once a company has passed these initial checks does the second stage begin: an independent on-site inspection. An experienced FMB assessor visits a current or recently completed project to physically inspect the quality of the workmanship. Companies that don’t meet the required standard are not admitted. The entire process typically takes two to four weeks, and not every applicant makes it through.
Once a member, the inspections don’t stop. In 2024, the FMB brought its inspections process fully in-house and completed over 1,300 checks in just six months. Members are subject to regular, ongoing inspections to ensure standards are maintained — and membership can be revoked if they’re not.
For Lynch Brother Homes, this ongoing scrutiny has proved to be a powerful validation of our work. Our comprehensive refurbishment of an 18th-century residence in Islip — a project that involved bringing the property up to current building compliance whilst preserving its historic character — was independently inspected by the FMB and subsequently nominated for the 2025 Master Builder Awards. The Master Builder Awards received a record-breaking 771 entries across 12 categories in 2024/25, making a nomination a significant mark of recognition from within the industry.
The protections FMB membership provides for homeowners are equally significant. The FMB offers warranty cover through its insurance arm, including a 10-year warranty scheme for new homes. Members must adhere to a strict code of conduct, and the FMB provides a formal mediation and dispute resolution service — meaning that if an issue arises on any project, there’s an independent body that can step in to help resolve it. Members also have access to jargon-free, professionally drafted contract templates that protect both parties, setting clear expectations from the outset.
Our FMB membership sits alongside a growing list of industry recognition: finalist for Business of the Year at the Jack FM Brick Awards 2023, finalist for Residential Property Developer of the Year at the Oxfordshire Business Awards in 2024 and 2025, and Henry Lynch being named Young Business Person of the Year. These aren’t separate from our FMB commitment — they’re a direct result of the standards it holds us to.

Guild of Master Craftsmen
The Guild of Master Craftsmen is one of the UK’s longest-established trade associations, representing over 500 different trades. While other accreditations on this list focus primarily on business practices and consumer protection, the Guild’s emphasis is different: it exists to recognise and uphold the quality of the craft itself. The Guild’s roots stretch back to the tradition of medieval craft guilds, where the title of “master craftsman” had to be earned through demonstrated skill, verified by peers, and maintained through ongoing commitment to excellence.
The vetting process for Guild membership reflects this focus on craftsmanship. The Guild carries out up to 28 separate checks on every applicant — one of the most thorough assessment processes in the UK trades sector. These checks include spot checks on completed work, verification of customer references, examination of online reviews, an assessment of the business and the individuals running it, and an in-person visit from a Guild assessor to the applicant’s workplace. The assessor evaluates all aspects of the business, including the quality of workmanship, professionalism, and the systems in place to ensure consistent delivery. Applicants must also provide high-quality references from previous customers, which are independently verified.
Membership is not guaranteed, and some applicants are rejected after assessment. Nor is it permanent. The Guild actively monitors its members and requires ongoing adherence to its Code of Practice. If a member’s workmanship or behaviour falls below the Guild’s standards, their membership can be revoked. The Guild also takes the unauthorised use of its emblem seriously — in one recent case, a business in Scotland was fined £2,000 for falsely displaying the Guild logo.
For homeowners, the Guild provides an additional safeguard through its conciliation service. If a dispute arises between a client and a Guild member, the Guild’s conciliation team investigates the complaint thoroughly, which may include sending an independent expert to carry out an on-site inspection of the work. All Guild members are required to adhere to the recommendations of this conciliation process, ensuring that issues are resolved fairly.
For a company like ours — where directors Henry and John Lynch both started as apprentice carpenters and progressed through every aspect of the trade before leading a team of 50+ professionals — Guild membership is particularly meaningful. It’s a recognition that our roots are in the craft, not just in the business of building. Henry Lynch won Oxfordshire’s Best Apprentice Award early in his career, and that commitment to hands-on craftsmanship remains central to how we operate. When a Guild assessor evaluates our work, they’re not just checking paperwork — they’re assessing whether the finished product meets the standard expected of a master craftsman.

Checkatrade
Checkatrade is one of the UK’s most widely recognised platforms for finding vetted tradespeople, with over 22 million searches for skilled trades on their website in 2024 alone. Founded in 1998, the platform has built its reputation on a rigorous vetting process and a commitment to verified, transparent customer reviews.
Before Lynch Brother Homes could be listed on Checkatrade, we had to pass up to 12 separate checks. These include photo ID verification, proof of trading address, verification of all regulated qualifications and accreditations, an open-source media check (searching for any adverse media coverage about the business), personal and business County Court Judgement (CCJ) checks, a bankruptcy and insolvency check, a company history review, a duplicate check (ensuring the business hasn’t previously been declined, suspended, or expelled), and a director search examining previous directorships and disqualifications. For a limited company like ours, the director checks add a further layer of scrutiny on the individuals running the business.
These aren’t one-off checks. Checkatrade monitors members on an ongoing basis, requiring updated proof of qualifications and continuing to vet members throughout their membership. Members must also commit to upholding the Checkatrade Standard — six quality commitments covering workmanship, personal conduct, safety, communication, transparency on costs, and a commitment to welcoming customer reviews. Failure to meet these standards can result in suspension or termination of membership. In a recent six-month period, Checkatrade rejected a record 668 applicants who failed their sign-up checks — a 13% increase year-on-year — demonstrating how seriously they take the vetting process.
The review system is where Checkatrade really differentiates itself for homeowners. Every review is verified — customers are contacted by SMS or phone to confirm their feedback is genuine, and analytics technology is used to detect and remove fake reviews. Members cannot edit or delete reviews, and Checkatrade publishes negative reviews alongside positive ones after investigation. This means the reviews you see on a Checkatrade profile are as close to an unfiltered picture of a company’s performance as you’ll find.
Our Checkatrade profile currently shows a 10 out of 10 rating from 23 verified reviews, with perfect scores across all six assessed categories: initial impression, punctuality, cleanliness, quality, value, and overall opinion. Clients consistently highlight the standard of our communication, the professionalism and friendliness of our on-site teams, and the quality of the finished work. For homeowners researching how to choose a builder in Oxford or trying to avoid cowboy builders, this kind of independently verified, uneditable feedback is exactly the evidence worth seeking out.
Checkatrade also provides a homeowner guarantee of up to £1,000 on work booked through the platform, offering an additional safety net if something doesn’t go to plan.

TrustATrader
TrustATrader has been connecting homeowners with vetted tradespeople since 2005 and is one of the UK’s most established trader recommendation platforms. What distinguishes TrustATrader from a simple online directory is its approach to both vetting and review integrity — the platform is selective about who it admits and strict about maintaining standards once members are on board.
To join TrustATrader, Lynch Brother Homes had to meet a set of requirements that go beyond basic verification. Applicants must have a minimum of two years’ trading experience and provide at least five customer references, each of which TrustATrader independently contacts by phone to verify. The process also includes verification of photo ID and proof of address, confirmation of all relevant qualifications and accreditations required by law, proof of public liability insurance, and — for limited companies — company registration details and VAT documentation. Once all documents are submitted, TrustATrader conducts its own independent checks on the business, its directors, and its trading history. The process typically takes two to three weeks, and applicants who fail to meet the criteria are rejected.
TrustATrader is also selective about market saturation. The platform actively monitors how many tradespeople are listed within specific postcodes to ensure that its members receive a fair share of enquiries — meaning that being accepted in an area like Oxford, where demand for quality builders is high, carries additional weight. Any trader who falls below TrustATrader’s standards risks losing their profile entirely.
The review system is central to how TrustATrader operates. Reviews are moderated and verified — 50% of positive reviews are published immediately, while the remainder undergo validation checks. Negative reviews trigger an investigation by TrustATrader’s complaints team, who contact both parties to establish the facts before deciding whether to publish. Crucially, TrustATrader conducts regular spot-check calls to consumers who have left reviews, verifying that the feedback is genuine. Any trader found to be involved in fake reviews is deactivated immediately. The platform operates a three-strike rule: traders who repeatedly fail to meet standards are permanently removed and banned from returning.
Members also receive a photograph ID card as proof of their TrustATrader accreditation, which can be shown to clients on site — a practical touch that provides immediate verification for homeowners who want to confirm they’re dealing with a vetted professional.
Our TrustATrader profile currently holds a 5.0 out of 5.0 rating across all categories — including initial impression, punctuality, cleanliness, quality, value, and overall opinion — with zero missed appointments in the past six months. Our coverage extends across Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Berkshire, Northamptonshire, Warwickshire, Wiltshire, and Gloucestershire, reflecting the range of projects we deliver from our headquarters in Cumnor, Oxford.

What This All Means for Your Project
Any builder can tell you they do good work. Accreditations exist so you don’t have to take their word for it.
What makes Lynch Brother Homes different is that we haven’t just ticked one box — we’ve submitted to independent scrutiny from five separate bodies, each with its own standards, its own vetting process, and its own ongoing monitoring. Here’s what that adds up to in practice:
Independent verification of our work. The FMB has physically inspected our projects. The Guild of Master Craftsmen has assessed our craftsmanship on-site. TrustMark requires regular independent inspections. These aren’t self-assessments — they’re evaluations conducted by experienced professionals who have no stake in the outcome.
Verified financial and business checks. Every accreditation on this list has independently checked our financial standing, insurance cover, trading history, and director credentials. Checkatrade runs up to 12 checks. The Guild conducts up to 28. TrustMark verifies compliance with government-endorsed standards. You don’t need to take our word for our financial stability or professionalism — multiple independent organisations have confirmed it.
Real consumer protections. TrustMark provides deposit protection and insurance-backed guarantees. The FMB offers warranty cover and a dispute resolution service. The Guild runs a conciliation process with on-site inspection capability. Checkatrade offers a homeowner guarantee. These are tangible protections with real mechanisms behind them — not just promises on a website.
Transparent, verified reviews. Both Checkatrade and TrustATrader use verified review systems where feedback is independently checked and cannot be edited or removed by the business. Our 10/10 Checkatrade rating and 5.0/5.0 TrustATrader rating are based on verified feedback from real clients on real projects.
Ongoing accountability. None of these memberships are permanent or unconditional. Every one of them can be revoked if we fail to maintain the required standards. That’s exactly the kind of ongoing accountability that homeowners should look for when choosing a builder.
Whether you’re planning a loft conversion, a kitchen extension, a complete renovation, or a bespoke new build, our accreditations give you something more powerful than a sales pitch: independently verified evidence that we deliver what we promise. It’s the difference between a company that says it’s trustworthy and one that has proved it — repeatedly, to multiple independent organisations, over many years.
